Congress MLA Rajendra Bharti Sentenced to 3 Years in Bank Fraud Case
A Delhi court has sentenced Congress MLA Rajendra Bharti to three years imprisonment for his role in a decade-old fraud case involving a rural cooperative bank. The conviction, handed down by the Rouse Avenue Court (also referred to as the MP-MLA Court), relates to financial irregularities at the Gramin Vikas Bank (also called the Land Development Bank) in his Datia constituency. Bharti and a co-accused, Raghuvir Sharan Prajapati, were found guilty of criminal conspiracy, cheating, and forgery, and were subsequently taken into custody and sent to Tihar Jail. The case, which is over ten years old, stemmed from a complaint that led to an investigation into alleged fraudulent activities. The court's conviction on April 1st was followed by the sentencing on April 2nd, finalizing the legal proceedings against the legislator. As a result of the three-year sentence, Rajendra Bharti is now likely to face immediate disqualification from his position as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) in Madhya Pradesh. This is in accordance with the Representation of the People Act, which mandates the disqualification of any legislator convicted and sentenced to imprisonment for two years or more.
