Bain Gets RBI Nod for Manappuram Stake; Ola Electric Shares Plunge
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has granted conditional approval to affiliates of Bain Capital to acquire up to 41.7% stake in Manappuram Finance Ltd. This significant transaction paves the way for a transition to a joint promoter structure for the gold loan provider. The deal also triggers a mandatory open offer for the purchase of an additional 26% stake from public shareholders at ₹236 per share, as mandated by SEBI regulations. Manappuram Finance's Managing Director and CEO, V P Nandakumar, indicated that the move would help the company enhance and expand its branch network across India. Despite this milestone, the approval comes with significant regulatory conditions requiring ongoing compliance, placing the company's shares under close market observation. In stark contrast, shares of Ola Electric Mobility Ltd. plummeted to an all-time low, declining as much as 7% following the release of its Q3 FY26 results. The electric vehicle maker reported that its revenue more than halved compared to previous quarters, overshadowing a narrower net loss. Brokerages reacted sharply, with one major firm downgrading the stock and slashing its price target by 60%, citing doubts about the company's survival amidst intense competition. The challenges for Ola Electric are underscored by its market performance. While the broader electric two-wheeler industry showed strong growth, Ola continued to underperform its peers. The company's sales volumes collapsed to 32,000 units in Q3FY26 from 125,000 units in Q1FY26, causing its market ranking to drop to fifth place with just a 6% share. The stock is now down over 62% from its IPO price of ₹76 and approximately 82% from its all-time high recorded in August 2024, with some analysts foreseeing a further 35% downside. Together, these developments highlight divergent paths for two prominent Indian companies. Manappuram Finance enters a new phase with a major global investor, albeit under regulatory scrutiny, while Ola Electric faces a severe crisis of confidence from investors following its disappointing operational and financial performance.

John Healey has been named the new finance minister for the UK, a move that saw Sterling hold its ground against a weaker dollar. This appointment follows recent political shifts and has drawn attention to the challenges facing the UK economy, including rising debt and weak growth. Economists have debated whether the solution lies in loosening fiscal rules or in measuring government assets and non-debt liabilities to determine if public spending can successfully build economic capacity. Government Rules Out Scrapping LTCG Tax on Equity Investments
The Union government has firmly stated that it has no intention of abolishing or scrapping the Long-Term Capital Gains (LTCG) tax on equity transactions for retail investors. The Finance Ministry clarified to Parliament that there are no proposals under consideration to remove this tax structure, confirming that the current 12.5% LTCG tax remains unchanged. This clarification was issued in response to recurring demands from market participants seeking either the abolition of the LTCG tax or an increase in the exemption level. The government emphasized that while tax policies, including capital gains rates, are periodically reviewed as part of the annual budget process, there is currently no proposal to offer long-term tax relief for domestic equity investors.
