US F-15 Shot Down in Iran; Pilot Rescued, Search for Second Crew Member
A U.S. F-15E Strike Eagle has been shot down over Iran, marking the first time an American fighter jet has been lost to enemy fire in over two decades. The last such incident was an A-10 Thunderbolt II during the 2003 invasion of Iraq, underscoring the escalating severity of the current conflict. According to reports, one pilot has been successfully rescued in a complex and dangerous operation. The rescue was carried out by two U.S. military helicopters, likely involving a team of pararescue jumpers. A former commander described such missions as 'harrowing and dangerous,' typically involving at least 24 specialists scouring the area in Black Hawk helicopters, prepared to jump from planes to make contact with and secure missing personnel. However, a second crew member from the downed aircraft remains missing, and a search operation is ongoing. Iran has claimed responsibility, with its state media posting photos of the jet's alleged wreckage. The incident occurred amid broader hostilities, with Iranian reports also citing strikes on a key bridge under construction that killed at least eight people and wounded 95, further highlighting the widening impact of the war on a crucial global trade route in the Persian Gulf.
