Italian Coastguard Recovers 19 Migrant Bodies in Mediterranean Rescue
The Italian coastguard has recovered 19 bodies from a migrant boat in a tragic incident off the coast of Lampedusa. The rescue operation, which took place approximately 85 miles (135 km) from the Italian island and inside Libyan search and rescue waters, was initiated after a small dinghy was found in distress in the Mediterranean Sea early Wednesday. According to reports from the Italian news agency ANSA and confirmed by Lampedusa's mayor, Filippo Mannino, the coastguard patrol vessels located the boat and discovered a devastating scene. Alongside the 19 deceased, 58 survivors were rescued from the vessel. Among the survivors, at least five people, including two children, were reported to be in critical condition, suffering from hypothermia and intoxication from hydrocarbon fumes. They were transported to a health centre on the island for emergency treatment. The incident underscores the extreme dangers faced by migrants attempting the perilous central Mediterranean crossing from North Africa to Europe. While most sources report 19 fatalities, a minor discrepancy exists, with Xinhua and ANSA's own headline initially citing 18 bodies recovered.
