US and China Navigate Strategic Ties at Shangri-La Dialogue
US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth addressed the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, providing a critical gauge of US-China relations following a recent summit between President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping. Hegseth's remarks focused on the Trump administration's Indo-Pacific strategy and China's military modernization, while observers looked for signs of a moderated tone regarding Taiwan and Iran peace talks. While China sent a lower-level delegation from the PLA National Defence University rather than its defense chief, Beijing sought to strengthen military ties with the UK on the sidelines. Meanwhile, India reaffirmed its cooperation with the US and NATO, and Vietnamese leader To Lam warned of regional instability by citing the Strait of Hormuz as a cautionary example.
