15 towns shortlisted for UK's inaugural Town of Culture 2028
The Culture Secretary, Lisa Nandy, has revealed a shortlist of 15 towns competing for the inaugural UK Town of Culture title to be awarded in 2028. The list includes Corby, Great Yarmouth, Basildon, three Scottish towns (Isle of Bute, Lerwick and one other), and two South Wales towns, Pontypridd and Port Talbot, among others, with a £3 million fund attached to the winning bid. Several regions expressed disappointment after none of their applicants made the cut, notably the West Midlands, Shropshire, Oxfordshire and other parts of England. The competition, which attracted nearly 400 entries, aims to showcase how towns can use culture to drive regeneration and community pride across the UK.
