Putin Rejects Meeting With Zelenskyy as Ukraine Launches Mass Drone Strikes
Russian President Vladimir Putin has rejected an open letter from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy proposing a face-to-face meeting to end the war. Speaking at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum, Putin stated there is "no point" in such a meeting, citing a May 22 drone strike on a dormitory in Luhansk and insisting that Russia will achieve its goals in the Donbas region. Following this diplomatic deadlock, Ukraine launched hundreds of drones into Russia on the final day of the economic forum and struck five cargo ships in the Sea of Azov accused of stealing grain. Meanwhile, European leaders including Sir Keir Starmer and Emmanuel Macron have met to discuss ramping up hypersonic missile defenses and establishing conditions for future peace talks.
