Mexico City tightens security and caps crowds for Mexico‑England World Cup match after fan deaths
Mexico City announced heightened security measures and reduced capacity at the Angel of Independence monument and the main fan festival following four deaths during celebrations of Mexico's win over Ecuador. The steps were taken before Sunday’s round‑of‑16 World Cup match between Mexico and England, which will proceed at its scheduled kick‑off time. The English squad faced a hostile reception, being booed upon arrival at their hotel, and players later reported a chilly atmosphere from Mexican supporters. While officials emphasized safety, some media noted the tense atmosphere and logistical challenges, including discussions about possibly moving the match time, which ultimately remained unchanged.
