Bauhaus School Becomes Focal Point of German Far-Right Culture War
Germany's legendary Bauhaus school has been drawn into a political culture war as the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party targets the institution ahead of state elections. The AfD characterizes the school's modernist legacy as "rootless modernism" that opposes nationally rooted culture, proposing a shift toward traditional architecture and the removal of subsidies for art they deem anti-German. This tension emerges as the school marks its centenary, highlighting a clash over German identity. The dispute centers on the Bauhaus Dessau UNESCO World Heritage Site, including the Masters' Houses of Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee, as the AfD uses the site's radical design history to campaign against perceived globalist influences in favor of national tradition.
