Reform UK Councils Review Net Zero Policies Across East of England
Reform UK has launched a series of reviews and audits into net-zero strategies after gaining control of several councils in the East of England. In Norfolk, the administration immediately pushed for an investigation into climate-related spending, while Essex County Council faces a review of its planned £45.7 million commitment to climate activities. Suffolk officials have similarly indicated plans to rescind climate emergency declarations. Supporters of the move, including Net Zero Watch, describe the shift as a reversal of unsustainable and expensive policies. However, critics and some opposition councillors have urged the new administrations to remain open-minded about climate change, noting that the UN considers net-zero emissions essential to limiting global warming.

Underground Gases and Climate Swings Linked to Ancient Mass Extinctions
Scientists propose that volatile gases emanating from deep within the earth could be responsible for extreme climate shifts leading to ancient mass extinctions. This theory draws parallels between geological upheaval and major biological crises spanning hundreds of millions of years. Furthermore, research exploring gas shales has revealed unique ecosystems, including rock-eating fungi and tardigrades, suggesting that life continues to adapt in extreme environments. These findings underscore the deep connection between planetary geochemistry, climate stability, and biodiversity.
