Pro-Trump Candidate Abelardo De La Espriella Leads Colombia's First-Round Presidential Vote
Abelardo De La Espriella, a criminal lawyer nicknamed 'El Tigre,' has emerged as the frontrunner in Colombia's presidential election after securing more than 10 million votes in the first round. De la Espriella, an outsider and admirer of Donald Trump and Nayib Bukele, has pledged a hardline crackdown on narcotics and armed groups to reverse the security trends of the current administration. He will face Cepeda, a human rights activist and senator backed by left-wing President Gustavo Petro, in a runoff election scheduled for June 21. While supporters view De la Espriella as a necessary force for law and order, critics and some media outlets describe him as a far-right candidate whose platform represents a sharp departure from Petro's leftist legacy.
