Six Dead in Worst Diving Accident in Maldives History
Five Italian nationals—including an ecology professor, a marine biologist, and a diving instructor—perished after entering a 60-meter-deep cave in the Maldives' Vaavu Atoll. A Maldivian military diver also died during the search operation. The victims were recovered from a deep section of the cave by a specialist Finnish and Maldivian team, and their gear has since been seized by Italian authorities. Rescuers suggest the tragedy was caused by human error and a "sand wall illusion," which may have led the group to mistake a dead-end tunnel for the exit. While some reports indicate the divers lacked optimal equipment, Finnish rescue experts believe the group deliberately entered the cave and became lost, resulting in a fatal lack of exit options.
