A young unmarried couple in Indonesia's conservative Aceh province was publicly caned after being convicted by an Islamic Sharia court. The punishment, consisting of 21 lashes each, was carried out on a stage in Banda Aceh before a crowd of approximately 100 witnesses and officials wearing robes and hoods. The sentencing followed a viral TikTok livestream in which the pair were seen kissing, sparking widespread outrage. While the punishment was carried out under local Sharia law, Amnesty International has condemned the action, stating that the caning violates the prohibition of torture.
