France bans public drinking and outdoor sports as heat wave hits Europe
France activated emergency services and the military on a wildfire alert and prohibited public drinking in red‑alert zones, including Paris, as temperatures surged above 40 °C. The measures also cancelled concerts, sports events and limited outdoor activities during the Fête de la Musique festival. The heat wave, described by meteorologists as one of the most intense in decades, has already caused several deaths across the country and disrupted transport and public life. Authorities say the restrictions aim to reduce heat‑related health risks and lower the chance of fires, while neighboring European nations grapple with similar temperature extremes.
