NC House Overrides Governor Stein's Vetoes on DEI and Immigration Laws
The North Carolina House of Representatives voted 71-47 to override four vetoes by Governor Josh Stein, narrowly meeting the three-fifths requirement at 60.17%. The measures include three bills that eliminate diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs in state government and public education, as well as a law requiring state cooperation with ICE for immigration enforcement. While the votes were largely partisan, some Democratic lawmakers broke ranks to pass the Republican priorities. The overrides occurred nearly a year after the initial vetoes and amidst a period of legislative tension, as the state has yet to pass a budget for 2025.
