Climate Change Deepens Gender Inequality, Hitting Women Hardest
A growing body of evidence reveals that climate change is not gender-neutral, with women and girls bearing a disproportionate burden of its impacts. During climate-related disasters, women are significantly more likely to be affected, and in agricultural contexts, they face heightened vulnerability due to gendered limitations in accessing information, resources, and credit, which reduces their capacity to adapt. This interconnection between gender inequality and climate change is particularly acute in regions like Africa, where climate change, fossil fuel extraction, and rising debt compound to reinforce deep-seated gender injustices. The consequences extend beyond economic and environmental strain. Research indicates that the stress of climate shocks, such as crop failure and economic instability, exacerbates social tensions, leading to an alarming prediction: by 2090, 10% of all cases of intimate partner violence are expected to be caused by climate change. Despite the severe and multifaceted nature of these impacts, a significant funding gap persists. Current capital flowing toward supporting women affected by climate change represents only a small fraction of what is required to address the scale of the problem. In response, experts are advocating for a feminist climate justice framework. This approach offers an antidote to dominant, exclusionary models of climate action, often described as 'petro-masculinity,' by bringing a crucial gender lens to policy and leadership. It calls for antiracist, feminist leadership to diversify power structures, ensuring that climate solutions are equitable and address the root causes of vulnerability, rather than perpetuating existing inequalities.
