U.S., Israel Strike Iran; Khamenei Killed, Sparking Regional Escalation
A major military escalation has erupted in the Middle East following coordinated attacks by the United States and Israel that resulted in the death of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iranian state media confirmed the leader's death, which occurred during strikes on Saturday, marking a severe intensification of long-simmering tensions, notably over Iran's nuclear program. In retaliation, Iran has launched a barrage of airstrikes targeting U.S. military bases in the region. The retaliatory attacks have prompted air-defense responses across several Gulf countries, with reports of missile debris causing injuries in Qatar. The situation has created widespread alarm, leading the U.S. to issue directives for embassy staff in Israel to depart immediately amid fears of further conflict. The crisis unfolds with President Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate, with no public events scheduled, as the international community calls for de-escalation. The Iranian foreign ministry has demanded an immediate halt to hostilities and a return to negotiations, underscoring the grave risk of a broader regional war.
