St. Pete Pride faces funding squeeze while preparing for record‑crowd event
St. Pete Pride is gearing up for its 2026 weekend, with police planning security for an anticipated 300,000‑plus attendees and city hall steps painted in rainbow colors. The festival will feature concerts, a night market, and a street fair, while city leaders publicly back the event despite recent state DEI restrictions. Organizers, however, say their budget is under pressure because several corporate donors have reduced contributions amid economic uncertainty and a heated political climate. The nonprofit is turning to smaller donors and community fundraising to cover costs, even as the city highlights the celebration as a hallmark of its LGBTQIA+ support.

Underground Gases and Climate Swings Linked to Ancient Mass Extinctions
Scientists propose that volatile gases emanating from deep within the earth could be responsible for extreme climate shifts leading to ancient mass extinctions. This theory draws parallels between geological upheaval and major biological crises spanning hundreds of millions of years. Furthermore, research exploring gas shales has revealed unique ecosystems, including rock-eating fungi and tardigrades, suggesting that life continues to adapt in extreme environments. These findings underscore the deep connection between planetary geochemistry, climate stability, and biodiversity.
