US and Iran Clash at UN Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference
The United States, supported by the UAE and European powers, has sharply condemned the United Nations' decision to appoint Iran as one of 34 vice presidents for the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) review conference. US officials described the move as shameful, arguing that granting Tehran a leadership role provides procedural legitimacy to a nation with a contentious record regarding its nuclear conduct. The confrontation occurs amid broader geopolitical instability, including collapsing US-Iran talks and reports of conflict involving the US and Israel. While Iran's foreign minister has engaged with Vladimir Putin, Russia remains a complex actor in the forum, having previously blocked NPT agreements due to its invasion of Ukraine.
