U.S. Submarine Sinks Iranian Warship Returning from Indian Exercise
A U.S. submarine has sunk the Iranian warship IRIS Dena in the Indian Ocean, marking a severe escalation of hostilities beyond the Middle East. The frigate was struck by a torpedo off the coast of Sri Lanka as it sailed home after participating in a peacetime multilateral naval exercise, known as MILAN, hosted by India. According to the Pentagon, this is the first time a U.S. submarine has sunk an enemy warship by torpedo since World War II. Sri Lankan authorities recovered 87 bodies and rescued 32 survivors from the water, while reports indicate a second Iranian vessel entered the area in the aftermath. The incident has significant geopolitical ramifications, particularly for India, which positions itself as a security provider in the Indian Ocean region. Analysts note that the inability to protect a guest warship participating in its joint drill poses a challenge to New Delhi's claims of regional guardianship. The attack has raised concerns about the conflict between the U.S., Israel, and Iran spreading into crucial international waterways. In response, Iran issued a grave warning to the United States. Meanwhile, the U.S. Defense Secretary, Pete Hegseth, defended the action, stating the U.S. has unique capabilities to 'hunt, find, and kill' such targets. Adding a further international dimension, Australian defense sources reported that crew members from the Royal Australian Navy were onboard the U.S. attack submarine, though the Australian government has refused to officially confirm their involvement.
